Days 6

18th March, Friday. No wind, clear sky. Not many news from Fukushima. Not many good things, but a calm. Even if we didn't know the truth, but a calm.

Because of yestrday's trouble, maybe we could save electricity so much today. No news about breakout tonight.We knew we were not safe but today seemed OK.

Anyway, today I want to write another thing.

12th March, as you know, me and Oeda were still in Seattle. We had been worrying about Japan so much but we decided to go out and buy records. At one shop, I found "$1 bin" on the floor.

There were no records inn that box, but were many old music magazines and songbooks (not in good condition). I happened to see somewhat Japanese letters in them.

I dug them deeper. I found two little books.

One was "Big Hit Melody", the other was "RHYTHM HIT PARADE".

I opened those books and saw them. Those were assorted American songs being famous in Japan from late 50s. Such as "Sho-Jo-Ji" by Eartha Kitt, "Johnny Guitar" by Peggy Lee, and many others. I saw scores, lyrics (English and Japanese). And in fact, I found those two books were almost same.

192pages. 100yen. Published by Famous Music Company (1-1, Ginza, Tokyo). Editor in cheif was Johnny Karlen.

Just a glance to it, my heart sang.

I brought them to the casher just after Oeda finished paying for the records. The casher lady said "Free. Go ahead!" But also I saw Oeda got freaking out to see them.

"Hey! What are them?
Where did you find?
Anything more?
Nothing for me?"

All through this day, Oeda asked me to exchange many times. Somethimes very childlike. "Hey, could you give those books? I will give you some girl scout cookies" I knew that was a kind of joke. But I knew it was deep from his heart. He really wanted them as being a part of this music business.

And then, we thought we had to learn to love music once more from those old books.

Today, I still keep both of them!

3月18日、金曜日。風もなく、よく晴れた。
原発に関するニュースも停滞気味。
好転はしていないが凪。
知らされていないだけかもしれないが凪。

昨日の停電騒ぎが効いて
意識的な節約モードのレベルが上がったのか
今日は大規模停電の可能性はない模様。

全体的に不安はぬぐえないものの
今日のところは判断保留といった感じの
奇妙な落ち着きが街にはある。

騒ぎ立ててそわそわしてもしかたないので
話はすこし戻る。

震災の翌々日、
まだアメリカにいた。
へこむ気持ちを奮い立たせて
レコードの買付に出かけた店に
「なんでも1ドル持ってけコーナー」があった。

レコードではなく
古い雑誌とか
状態のわるいソングブックなどが積まれたその奥に
日本語ちらっと見えた気がした。

気になったので
わさわさっと掘り返してみた。

小さな本が2冊出てきた。

一冊は「ビッグ・ヒット・メロディ」
一冊は「最新リズムヒットパレード」。

ぱらぱらとめくると
これはどうやら昭和30年代前半に
日本で発行された洋楽のソングブック。

歌メロディを記した楽譜と
英語詞もしくは訳詞が
譜割に沿って配置されている。

2冊のタイトルは違うが
仕様や奥付は一緒だった。

ちょっと見ただけで
胸が高鳴る。

アーサ・キットの「ショージョージ」には
「お腹のすいた洗い熊」という古い邦題が添えられているのを見て
思わずにんまりしてしまった。

買付の精算が終わったレジに
こそっとこの2冊を持っていったら
「そんなのタダでいいわよ」と
案の定オマケしてくれた。

ところが
ぼくの持っているその2冊を見て
血相を変えたのが大江田さんだ。

「なにそれ？
　どこにあったの？
　もうないの？
　ぼくの分は？」

その日一日、
ことあるごとに大江田さんはこの本のことを持ち出し
ぼくに交換をせまったが
「あの本とこのお菓子を交換してくれないかなあ」とか
とうてい飲み込めそうもない
子供じみた条件なのがおかしかった。

音楽の仕事をするうえで
手元に置いておきたいという気持ちもあるだろう。
でもそれよりも
この50年も前に刻まれた
音楽ファンたちの思いが
今ぼくたちに必要な気がしてならなかったんだと思う。

でも結局
大江田さんには本はあげてません！
