Days 3

On 14th March, at Narita airport, I heard two young men talking.

"Today is White Day, isn't it? Everybody forgets it!"
White Day is a diverse version of Valentine's Day (boys give back cookies to girls) in Japan.

Yes! Yes it was! I thought.

I had a little laugh and got an encouragement from them.

Before riding the bus on my way to Kichijoji, I saw many people talking each other. I thought it was so unusual to see that people like young lovers (look so naughty) and an aged couple (look so conservative) talking friendly about same matters. I mean this earthquake.

Me and Mr. Oeda also did talking to strangers around us.

Maybe, everybody wanted someone to talk to. They seemed all good guys more than usual.

This was so lovely scene that I wanted to pray for better future.

To go to Kichijoji, we were afraid of taking more than three hours, but maybe not much cars on the highways, we could reach the final destination in two hours.

From Kichijoji, we had to take trains. Trains from Shinjuku were all so crowded, but my train to Asagaya was not so.

I took a taxi from Asagaya station to my home. The driver said to me about the shortage of gas was so serious even in Tokyo.

Arriving home. Ringing the bell. My wife and my cat were here. I thought I would cry but I didn't. I was so much happier to meet them again more than crying. Just now.

3月14日、成田空港にて聞いた若者たちの会話。

「今日、ホワイトデーだったって、みんな忘れてねえ？」

そうだよね。
そうだったんだよね。

たあいもない会話に
思いがけず元気づけられる（すこしだけ）。

バスを待っているあいだ
いつもだったら絶対に口もききあわないような
若い恋人たちと年配のご夫婦の組み合わせで
おなじ地震の話題で
打ち解けて話をしているような場面をいくつも見た。

ぼくも大江田さんも
見ず知らずのひとと
いろいろ話をした。

たぶん
みんな顔は落ち着いていても
どこか不安で
だれかとすこしでも話したくて
しかたないのだ。
そして
みんないいやつだ。

こういう場面を見ていると
たとえこの先がひどく絶望的なことになっても
すこしでも日本にちいさな光が残されてほしいと
ますます思いたくなる。

吉祥寺までのバスは
通行止めや渋滞の影響もあって
3時間はかかると予告されていたが
いざ走り出してみると稼働している車がすくないのか
2時間ちょっとで目的地に着いた。

大江田さんが乗ろうとしている
下りの中央線は
めちゃくちゃに混んでいる。
ぼくの乗る上り線は
そうでもなかった。

阿佐ヶ谷駅からタクシー。
そろそろガソリンがなくなりそうだという不安を
運転手さんがしんみりと語ってくれた。

家に帰りベルを鳴らすと
ツマと猫。
会ったら泣いてしまうかと思っていたが
今だけはよろこびのほうが大きかった。
